Told through a number of interviews with Coetzee's friends and acquaintances, the book gives a glimpse of Coetzee's writing background, political views, his early struggles to become a writer, and his muses.
Surprisingly good and entertaining.

The Apostle

This is another Scot Harvath's action thriller following The Last Patriot. I found it less enjoyable as the same formula has been used and Brad Thor spent a lot of time to spice up the dialogues of the characters (possibly for the purpose of filling up pages) which led to nowhere.

I saw the movie first. Love it. The directing, cinematography, music and acting are superb. I think Danny Boyle deserves another Oscar nod. And so does James Franco.

I saw the movie first. Love it. The directing, cinematography, music and acting are superb. I think Danny Boyle deserves another Oscar nod. And so does James Franco.
I am so moved by the perseverance and stamina of Aron Ralston that I had to read his memoir to relive his tormenting experience. Surprisingly, he writes very well. This candid account of his entrapment in the Blue John Canyon is a brilliant autobiography and an ultimate celebration of strength, dignity and humanity.

This is the best novel I have read this year. What is said in the backcover of the book and the letter from the editor is true: you need to read it to feel it, to feel the profound impact it will have on the way you view the world, your moral standards and tolerance.
Narrated alternately by two women in a chance encounter, The Other Hand is both a commercial thriller and a literary masterpiece. A must read.

This is a fast-paced, thrilling page-turner with all the elements of an anti-terrorist blockbuster action movie. This is a fast-paced, thrilling page-turner with all the elements of an anti-terrorist blockbuster action movie. Scot Harvath is a younger version of Jack Bauer in the hit TV-series "24", and I'm interested in which Hollywood star will be casted in this role. Looking forward to the movie version.
Brad Thor's style is quite like Dan Brown, but Thor's writing is more crisp and simple and his books are easy to read. I finished this one in one day.
Thanks to J for lending me this exciting novel and introducing Brad Thor. Can't wait to start "The Apostle".

I am a bit disappointed by Michael Lewis' much anticipated work of I-bank, his first on the theme after "Liar's Poker". The Big Short depicts several investment gurus who made a lot of money from the financial tsunami in 2007/2008 by betting against the suprime mortgage market.

I am a bit disappointed by Michael Lewis' much anticipated work of I-bank, his first on the theme after "Liar's Poker". The Big Short depicts several investment gurus who made a lot of money from the financial tsunami in 2007/2008 by betting against the suprime mortgage market.
I have read about those individuals and their success stories in Andrew Ross Sorkin's "Too Big To Fail" and Gregory Zuckerman's "The Greatest Trade Ever". Hence, The Big Short has lost its novelty to me, and I think Sorkin and Zuckerman told a much better story than Lewis.
The Big Short is just not that interesting.

It was a hell of a good read. Totally enjoyable.

I am a huge fan of Presumed Innocent and have read the book and seen the movie many times. I think the denouement is still one of the most shocking endings of all novels/movies in history. Hence, I was very delighted to read this sequel which has been 20 years in the making.

I am a huge fan of Presumed Innocent and have read the book and seen the movie many times. I think the denouement is still one of the most shocking endings of all novels/movies in history. Hence, I was very delighted to read this sequel which has been 20 years in the making.
In terms of the plot, Scott Turow has again proved himself to be a master of suspense and thriller, and Innocent is even better than its prequel. The story is told from different perspectives of the protagonists and flips back and forth in various time zones. Rusty Sabich, now a state appeal court judge, found himself accused of murder again, this time his wife. There are a lot of twists and turns in the story, culminating in a stunning ending.
The ending is, I must say, no match for Presumed Innocent, and there are a couple of major flaws in the plot. However, the ingenious story-telling techniques and page-turner style of Turow still make it a winner. Very thrilling and exciting, this book cannot be put down and should be read in one go. It's also good to see old acquaintances like Sandy, Tommy and Barbara again.

The strength of this novel lies in the way the story is presented: the beginning of the novel in 2006 is the end of the story, which is told backwards, and the end of the novel in 2002 is the beginning of the story. One will learn the reasons for what happened to Mr. Wilberforce at the beginning of the novel when one finishes the book, and finds it very ironic and yet satisfying.
A great reading experience.
